HOW TO SECRETLY MEASURE YOUR PARTNER’S RING SIZE?
Planning a surprise proposal or gifting a piece of fine jewellery is one of life’s most exciting chapters. But amidst chosen gemstones and architectural band designs, one detail often causes panic: getting the ring size right without spoiling the surprise.
Whether you are designing a bespoke engagement ring or choosing a modern heirloom from EDXÚ, you don't need a direct answer to keep the moment completely secret. Here are five clever, time-tested methods to stealthily find your partner’s ring size.
1. Borrow an Existing Ring (The Gold Standard)
The easiest way to determine their size is to borrow a ring they already wear on their ring finger.
The Trace Method: Place the ring flat on a piece of paper and trace the inside circumference with a finely sharpened pencil multiple times. A jeweller can use this drawing to estimate the inner diameter.
Compare their ring to a printable ring size guide.
The Finger Test: Slide their ring onto one of your own fingers and mark the exact spot where it stops with a fine-tip pen.
Important Note: Make sure the borrowed ring is one they wear on the intended finger! Left and right hands often differ by up to half a size.
2. Enlist a Covert Accomplice
If your partner keeps their jewellery box locked up, call in backup. A trusted friend or family member can casually bring up jewellery during a shopping trip or casual conversation.
Your accomplice can:
Try on rings "for fun" during a day out and ask your partner to try one on too.
Pretend they are ring-shopping for themselves or someone else and ask for your partner’s size as a reference point.
3. The Sleeping String or Paper Test
If your partner is a deep sleeper, you can attempt the classic midnight measurement.
Take a thin strip of paper or non-stretchy string, gently wrap it around the base of their ring finger, and mark where the ends meet. Measure the length in millimetres against a ruler to calculate the inner circumference.
Tip: Keep in mind that fingers swell slightly overnight and during warmer weather, so keep the wrap comfortable rather than tight.
4. Buy a Promise, or a Dummy Proposal Ring First
If you want to pop the question with a grand gesture but fear getting the exact proportion wrong on a custom creation, propose with a promise ring, silver proposal ring, or temporary band first.
Using a promise ring as a placeholder allows you to capture the romance of the moment risk-free. Afterwards, you can book a surprise Bespoke Consultation together at our London studio to measure their finger precisely and design their dream piece together.
A Note on Perfection (and Resizing)
If your estimate ends up slightly off, don't worry. Ring sizing is as much an art as it is a science, and average UK ring sizes typically range from K to N for women and from Q to U for men.
At EDXÚ London, every bespoke ring design includes complimentary resizing within two months of purchase. Focus on crafting a meaningful design and creating an unforgettable moment, and we’ll handle the fine-tuning to ensure the final fit is absolute perfection.
